Florida Women’s Tennis Swept by Vanderbilt in SEC Tournament Second Round

Following a miraculous 4-3 win over Alabama on Wednesday night, the Gators (9-14, 4-11 SEC) entered their match with the Vanderbilt Commodores looking to stun a top conference opponent in the SEC tournament.

However, Vanderbilt (19-5, 11-4 SEC) entered Thursday night’s match with Florida well rested and in search of its fourth straight win. Shortly, the SEC powerhouse prevailed and the Commodores continued their dominance, punching a ticket to the third round of the SEC Tournament with a dominant 4-0 win.

Doubles

Florida freshmen Noémie Oliveras– Talia Neilson-Gatenby found themselves trailing 5-3 against junior Sonya Macavei-senior Amy Stevens, and couldn’t mount a comeback effort in their 6-3 loss on court three.

UF seniors Alicia DudeneyBente Spee, the No. 22 doubles pair in the nation, put up a good fight against No. 14 senior Célia-Belle Mohr-freshman Sophia Webster but couldn’t secure the upset, losing 6-4, as the Commodores secured the doubles point.

Junior Rachel Gailis-freshman Nikola Daubnerova went unfinished with sophomore Valeria Ray-junior Bridget Stammel trailing 5-2.

Singles

Oliveras quickly doubled Florida’s deficit, now 2-0, by medically retiring from her court six match against Stevens. The senior made quick work of Oliveras in set one with a 6-0 sweep before the freshman withdrew from the match.

No. 30 Gailis fell short on court one as No. 10 Mohr continued her dominant season in singles. Gailis’ 6-1, 6-2 loss put Vanderbilt ahead 3-0 as Florida couldn’t find an answer for the Commodores.

Neilson-Gatenby fell to No. 52 Stammel in straight sets on court three as Vanderbilt clinched a 4-0 sweep. The Florida freshman led set one early, but Stammel dug deep to gain the lead and never waivered in a 6-4, 6-4 win to send the Commodores to the third round of the SEC Tournament.

As a result, three singles matches went unfinished with Vanderbilt’s quick clinch of the match.

No. 53 Dudeney went unfinished with No. 62 Ray in a close match on court two. The senior won a tough tiebreaker 7-5 to secure a 7-6(5) win in set one, and led 3-2 in the second set when play stopped.

Spee abandoned her court four match with Webster tied 3-3 in set two after losing the first 6-3.

On court five, Daubnerova lost set one 6-2 and abandoned her match with Vanderbilt freshman Trinetra Vijayakumar trailing 5-3 in the second set.
