Oak Hall Cruises Past Newberry At Boys Lacrosse District Tourney

The Oak Hall boys lacrosse team continued its triumphant season with a 18-1 win against Newberry on Monday night. Coming off an 11-4 loss in their previous match against Ponte Vedra, Peirce Montes and the Eagles redeemed themselves in the 1A-District 4 Tournament semifinal.

A Dominant Start

Within the first quarter of Monday’s match, the top-seeded Eagles (14-2) were able to score six goals on the four seed Panthers (7-7). Newberry goalie Brandon Powell was no match for the fiery Oak Hall offense.

Leading scorer of the first quarter was sophomore Colton Keller, who flung two shots past Powell. The Eagles headed into the second quarter with a 6-0 lead against the Panthers. Later in the first half, Oak Hall had five more unanswered goals, with Montes scoring his second goal of the night. As the first half came to a close, it seemed as if the game was going to be a shutout.

Cradling Win

The Eagles kept their foot on the gas in the second half. Montes scored his third goal for a hat trick. Sophomore Dominic Moreschi also showed out as he scored two goals in just the third quarter.

After his team scored five unanswered goals in the third, coach Jonathan Montes began cycling in some players who don’t usually see the field. During the fourth quarter, backup goalie Sam Cohn saved four shots on goal and only allowed one shot to slip in.

“Often when you’re ahead like that, the coach’s honor is for the other team to start rotating out their starters,” Montes said.

The Eagles finished the fourth quarter scoring two more goals to settle the final score.

One Last Hurrah

A large part of the Eagles’ success this season is thanks to three outstanding seniors: Pierce Montes, Tyler Trefzger and Simon Myers. All three are committed to play at the next level. Montes and Tfezger both hold school records. The boys are hoping to keep their run going for as long as possible. Last year the team came just shy of it first final four appearance with a loss to Jacksonville Bolles in overtime. Bolles ended up falling short the next game. With a rematch yet to occur this season, the team is looking for redemption in this year’s tournament.

The Eagles (15-2) won the district championship Wednesday by defeating two seed Ocala Trinity Catholic 14-8.
