Gators Spring Game Wraps Up With Awards

Friendly competition wasn’t the only highlight of the Florida Gators’ Orange & Blue Game this past Saturday. After the final whistle, head coach Billy Napier announced the recipients of the 2025 spring awards giving fans one more reason to stick around.

These players weren’t just recognized for their stats, but for their growth, leadership, and impact on a tight-knit Gators team.

Spring Awards Celebrating Effort On and Off the Field

The Spring 2025 awards were handed out at the end of the spring scrimmage. These honors are part of an annual tradition designed to spotlight players who stood out both on and off the field.

For many younger players, the spring game offers a chance to showcase their talent. It’s the kind of opportunity they might not get during the high-pressure regular season. Those who made a clear impact this spring earned recognition. Meanwhile, veterans who’ve put in the work and helped set the tone for the team were also celebrated.

Appreciation for Newbies and Veterans

Gators freshman quarterback DJ Lagway was one of the most talked-about newcomers. He received the Steve Spurrier Commitment to Excellence Award after impressing coaches throughout the season. The five-star recruit showed poise, leadership, and playmaking ability in his first few months on campus.

Another standout was wide receiver Eugene Wilson III. He earned the Reidel Anthony Receiver Award after a strong 2024 campaign. Wilson racked up 538 receiving yards and six touchdowns last season and looks primed for a breakout year in 2025.

Several veterans were also recognized for their leadership and consistency. Defensive lineman Tyreak Sapp and center Jake Slaughter earned the Tim Tebow Leadership Award. Named after arguably the greatest quarterback in Florida history, this award goes to players who lead by example and set the tone inside the locker room.

Culture, Character, and Community

While some awards celebrated on-field production, others focused on the work that often goes unnoticed—culture, commitment, and community involvement.

For their consistent influence on team chemistry and off-field character, Caleb Banks, Trey Smack, and Taylor Spierto received the Vernell Brown Culture Award. Brown, a former Florida cornerback and captain, was known for his toughness, leadership, and relentless work ethic. This award honors players who carry forward those same values.

Meanwhile, Aidan Mizell and Josiah Davis were recognized with the Community Service Award for their efforts off the field and in the Gainesville community.

Looking Ahead to 2025 Season Opener in The Swamp

With spring camp wrapped up, Florida now turns its attention to the 2025 season. After selling out all seven home games last year, The Swamp is expected to be just as electric this fall. Major matchups include home games against Texas, Tennessee, and rival Florida State.

Florida opens the season on August 30 against the LIU Sharks. After a spring focused on growth, leadership, and competition, the Gators are ready to get back under the lights.
