Threat Of Lightning Forces Early End To P.K. Yonge Senior Night Vs. Oak Hall

Lightning and rain brought an abrupt end to P.K. Yonge‘s Senior Night matchup against Oak Hall on Friday night at Bobby Hawkins Field by halting play with two outs in the bottom of the second inning and resulted in a no contest.

Prior to first pitch, the Blue Wave celebrated their six seniors: Micah Gratto, Emma Mansfield, Preston Splitt, Connor Geiger, Josh Davis and Ciaran Foley. P.K. Yonge friends and family showed out by filling the bleachers in support of their soon-to-be graduates.

Following Senior Night festivities, an hour-long lightning rain delay pushed the game start back to 7:25 p.m. Fans and players alike packed into P.K. Yonge’s gymnasium and weight room in search of cover.

Short, but sweet

Once play began, Davis, P.K. Yonge’s usual first baseman, took the mound for just his third pitching appearance of the season. He threw two scoreless innings to open the game.

In the bottom of the first, Darius Medley led off with an infield single, then stole second with ease. Grotto followed with  a towering run-scoring triple over the center fielder’s head. One batter later, he scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Belleville that gave the Blue Wave a 2-0 lead.

P.K. Yonge added another run in the second on a wild pitch before a weather delay struck again. After a 20-minute wait, umpires officially suspended play at 8:24 p.m.

Up Next

Both teams will now turn their attention to the postseason, as neither P.K. Yonge nor Oak Hall will have time over the weekend to finish the game before their respective district playoff matchups.

P.K. Yonge (10-12) will play at Interlachen (12-8) on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Class 2A-District 4 Tournament. The Blue Wave will look to capitalize on Medley’s dynamic play. The sophomore infielder enters the postseason batting .455 with 36 stolen bases and 19 RBIs.

Meanwhile, Oak Hall (7-8)  will play Countryside Christian (14-5) on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the 1A-District 5 Tournament. The Eagles have already beaten Countryside twice this season and will lean on senior standout Gavin Jones, who’s had a monster year at the plate with a .542 batting average, three home runs and 24 RBIs.
