Saints Get Run-Rule Victory Against State College Of Florida

The Santa Fe College Saints defeated State College of Florida 15-7 in run-rule fashion Thursday in Gainesville to snap a three-game losing streak.

The Saints (20-22, 11-14 Mid-Florida Conference) came out firing early by putting up nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff batter Griffin Sorrow reached first base on an error and used his speed to steal second. Santa Fe College then strung together five straight hits to jump to a 4-0 lead.

The lineup turned over and Sorrow and Robert Nedry hit back-to-back RBI doubles to stretch the lead to 9-0. The Manatees (28-16, 15-10) finally got out of the inning on a liner to the shortstop, who flipped to second base to beat the runner who was late on getting back.

In the top of the third inning, the Manatees were able to put four runs up on the board. Mario Trivella started off the inning with a triple and was brought home by Hayden Gustavson, who grounded out to the third baseman. The Manatees then had three straight singles and a two-RBI triple from Ben Ryan that brought the score to 9-4 Saints.

A Hitting Masterclass

The hits continued to pour in for the Saints. A third inning highlighted by Sorrow’s third RBI of the day put the Saints up 11-4. Sorrow went 3-for-5 with two singles and a double. Nedry finished 4-for-5 with three singles and an RBI double.

Later, the Manatees responded with a three-run long ball from Luke Boykin that brought the score to 12-7 in the sixth inning.

The eighth inning started with back-to-back ground outs by the Saints and it looked like we would go to a ninth inning. Then Trey Freeman and Aiden Andreu both reached base on singles to put runners on for Tucker Hansen, who hit a ball to the right field foul line that stayed fair and brought both Freeman and Andreu home to win the game 15-7.

Despite the multitude of hits in this game for both teams the Santa Fe pitching staff still put up a solid game. Starting pitcher Nick Staszak pitched six innings and had seven strikeouts and only walked one. The strikeouts continued for relief pitcher Stephen Joyce, who had four of his own and only gave up one hit.
