It was an up-and-down week in the SEC for teams at the top of the standings. Texas made a statement at home against Georgia. Tennessee dropped its first series of the year after a tough Saturday against Texas A&M. LSU and Vanderbilt each had a road sweep. Auburn won the series against rival Alabama and Ole Miss won its final two games at Kentucky to win the series.

Arkansas (30-3, 11-1 SEC) moves to the No. 1 spot in the SEC rankings. The Razorbacks have been on a roll and the train did not stop this weekend when the Hogs swept Missouri. They outscored the Tigers 51-4 in three games, moving to 11-1 in conference play. Infielder Cam Kozeal had himself a weekend at the plate. Kozeal went 9-for-12 with two home runs and 13 RBIs. Kozeal was named SEC Player of the Week.

Texas (26-4, 11-1) jumped three spots to No. 2 after an impressive weekend when the Longhorns swept Georgia. Texas’ pitching stole the show, holding one of college baseball’s best offenses to eight runs and three home runs. Jared Spencer was phenomenal on Friday. Spencer went 7 2/3 innings, giving up one run and striking out 11.
Jared Spencer was sublime tonight. Shut down the nation’s top offense.
The senior answered the bell tonight.

That was followed by freshman Dylan Volantis, who was equally as good. He finished the game Friday by going 1 1/3 innings and striking out one. On Sunday, he delivered in relief. Volantis went four innings and gave up no runs, one hit, a walk and eight strikeouts.
Vols and Bulldogs drop
What was the biggest upset of the weekend? Tennessee (28-4, 9-3) dropped the series against Texas A&M. The Volunteers beat the Aggies 10-0 and threw their second no-hitter of the year on Friday. As if the teams swapped jerseys for the day, Texas A&M knocked out Tennessee. Outscoring the Vols 26-9 and sweeping the doubleheader. For the first time this season, Tennessee was the inferior team.
LSU (30-3, 10-2) headed to America’s heartland to take on Oklahoma for the first time in Norman. The Tigers made sweeping a top-10 Sooners team look easy. It started Thursday when Kade Anderson tossed a complete-game shutout, striking out 14 on 135 pitches. Anderson’s efforts were enough to be named SEC Pitcher of the Week. Jared Jones continues to mash for this Tigers lineup. He had five hits this series, including three in the 10-2 victory on Saturday

Georgia (29-4, 8-4) had a tough weekend in the Lone Star State. The Bulldogs got swept by Texas, but had chances to win Saturday and Sunday games. On Saturday, Georgia led 4-2 before a disastrous seventh inning doomed them. On Sunday, Georgia took the Longhorns to extra innings before losing on a walk-off home run.
A bad combination of the bats going cold in key spots and being outpitched made the difference. Nolan McCarthy was the one bright spot offensively for Georgia. He went 4-for-11 with two home runs and three RBIs. The Bulldogs will have a chance to redeem themselves this upcoming weekend when they host No. 1 Arkansas.

This week the Top 5 is the exact same as the D1Baseball rankings. Despite Texas and Tennessee having the same number of losses, Texas pitching has led the way with its pitching during SEC play. Especially considering the SEC has 10 teams inside the Top 25, six of them being in the Top 10. That is an impressive stat for Texas.
Georgia’s starting pitching struggles finally caught up to them. The Dawgs have the most explosive bats in the country, but their starters rank 13th during conference play and this week their 1-3 record reflected that after being swept by Texas.
Overall, the SEC is the best conference in college baseball. If Texas continues to play the way it has, do not be surprised if the Longhorns take over not just the top spot in the SEC, but in the country.
