The last time the Huskies claimed the title was back in 2016 when they faced Syracuse, closing out the game 82-51. That was UConn’s fourth consecutive National Championship win at the time, a huge milestone for the Huskies. They are back to that standard after Sunday’s game.
The UConn Trio
UConn started off strong with starters Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd and Sara Strong leading the team. The three together managed to outscore the Gamecocks with their combined points alone, totaling 65. They are the first trio of teammates to each score around 100 points in an NCAA tournament in 16 years. The last time this happened was in 2009 with former Huskies Maya Moore, Tina Charles, and Renee Montgomery.
Additionally, the trio was capable of holding their own individual moments throughout the game. Bueckers finished off the game with 17 points, as Fudd did with 24. Strong managed to carry a double-double, putting up 24 points and 15 rebounds throughout the four quarters.
UConn Takes The Lead
As the match progressed, the Huskies managed to put their all onto the court. Throughout every quarter, the point gap grew. The first quarter ended with a 5-point gap (19-14), the second with a 10-point gap (36-26), and the third doubling with a 20-point gap (62-42). By the third quarter, the Huskies were on their way to a blowout. With the Gamecocks struggling to hold the Huskies back, the buzzer sounded at a closing score of 82-59 – a 23-point gap.
The 2025 NCAA Women’s Basketball Champions
With this win, the Huskies are the only women’s basketball program to hold 12 national titles. The team’s head coach, Geno Auriemma, was emotional after this win – understanding that all 12 national championships have been won under his coaching. Auriemma’s first championship win dated back in 1995 against Tennessee, and has poured everything into this team ever since. With another championship win added to their record, UConn is set to bring this same energy next year to claim their thirteenth. It will be difficult with Bueckers set for the WNBA draft.
