The Gainesville High School girls lacrosse team defeated Newberry 12-2 on Senior Night. The Thursday win extends the Hurricanes’ record to 15-3, their best record in program history.
The Panthers (6-5) closed their season with the loss, their second to Gainesville High this season.
Early Lead
The Hurricanes started strong when senior Rebecca Kim scored in the first minute. Abby Duffield, senior Seyran Kepic and Libby Rant went on to score in quick succession. After Rant scooped up a ground ball, giving the ‘Canes possession, Karly Walser scored, bringing the score up to 5-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Newberry fans were audibly disappointed with the referees as the second quarter began. One fan at one point yelled, “Ref, are you going to watch?”
As for GHS, Walser, Kepic and Kim each scored their second goals. The Panthers almost scored near the end of the quarter, but the shot was blocked by GHS goalkeeper Eliza Mcginnis. The first half came to a close with the score at 8-0.
GHS showed no signs of slowing down in the second half. Kim scored twice more in just the third quarter. Then, Maeve Baker got a goal in during the third.
Newberry finally responded with eight minutes left in the game after Lula McCullors made a goal. Three minutes later, Lorelai Crehore scored, bringing the score to 11-2. Rant made the final goal of the game with three minutes on the clock to lock in the GHS win.

Celebrating The Seniors
The Hurricanes celebrated their five seniors at the half. The five girls played lacrosse all four years of high school. Kepic, Mia Maddaugh and Kirsten Acuna will all be off to UF next year. Taylor Carr will be playing lacrosse at St. Thomas University. Kim will be studying at FSU.
