Gator Lacrosse’s Hamilton Is Breaking Barriers

Clark Hamilton’s first goal at the University of Florida was not just another point on the scoreboard, it was a historic moment for UF lacrosse.

On Feb. 7, freshman Hamilton became the first African American woman to score a goal on the UF women’s lacrosse team, breaking down barriers at UF and women’s lacrosse overall. Since her first goal, Hamilton has established herself as one of the team’s top players while also inspiring her coaches, teammates, and other athletes.

“I was obviously aware that it had never been done before. My first goal would set a record,” Hamilton said. “ At that moment, when I scored, I truly wasn’t thinking [about] me being the first African American to score a goal in this program, it was more of me being focused in the game.”

This is a testament of the selfless athlete Hamilton is; always engaged on the game and what she needs to do to contribute to her team and earn a win.

Making History

For Florida coach Amanda O’Leary the moment was monumental for the program.

“I think it’s such a great opportunity for not only our team, but also for the growth of the sport,” O’Leary said. “I’m just so proud of Clark because I think she came into the situation with eyes wide open. I’m just really proud of the effort that she’s put forth.”

Hamilton broke the barrier for the future of UF women’s lacrosse and the collegiate sport altogether. According to USA lacrosse, across all NCAA divisions, only 3% of lacrosse athletes are African American women.

“Looking back, I realize, wow, I made history. But I won’t be the last,” Hamilton said. “Players coming in after me will hopefully have more opportunities to contribute as well. It’s something special.”

Success

Hamilton had immediate success on the field. Although she’s a freshman, she has proven to have a strong skill set.

“We knew there wasn’t going to be a ceiling with her,” O’Leary said. “She’s got really good lacrosse skills, and she’s super athletic. She makes plays happen, and what she’s done up to this point is really impressive.”

Hamilton has played in all 11 games and started in eight. She ranks second on the team in key statistics: 30 goals, six assists, 12 ground balls, two caused turnovers, and two draw controls. O’Leary said her first collegiate goal was earned through hard work and dedication.

““She never takes a rep off,” O’Leary said. “She’s super self-driven. She sets lofty goals for herself and does whatever it takes to make them happen. That hard work is showing up on the field.”

The College Athlete Experience

Hamilton has embraced the challenges that come with playing at a top-tier program. Hamilton has found comfort in the camaraderie and support at UF.

“At the end of the day, it’s about being competitive, being a good teammate, and helping each other out,” Hamilton said. “Having fun and experiencing college for all it has to offer.”

Hamilton is contributing to improving the UF lacrosse program’s future through her record-setting achievements as a young player.

“I don’t think we could ask for anything more than what she’s given us thus far,” O’Leary said.
