Eastside Girls Lacrosse Suffers Loss On Senior Night

Eastside High’s girls lacrosse team suffered its 10th loss of the season Friday night, 13-3, against visiting Newberry on Senior Night.

The Rams (0-10) could not keep up with Newberry (6-3) to remain winless on the season.

An Interesting Start

The first quarter of the game consisted of refs falling, broken sticks and heart conditions. Right before the ball was tossed up at the first face-off, one of the refs slipped and fell backward. While this might have been a wonky start, Newberry still managed to charge down the field in the first minute of the game.

However, Eastside’s star goalie, Amara Ohaegbulam rejected the Panthers’ first shot. Shortly into the first quarter, a stick on Eastside’s side snapped, resulting in a quick pause and stick swap. After play resumed, the game started to get aggressive and falls were taken by players on both sides.

The most significant fall of them all was taken by Eastside’s Brynn Maltby. When Maltby went down, staff and the athletic trainer rushed onto the field, as she said her heart felt weird.

“I just had heartbeat in my ears, heartbeat everywhere, my heart was pounding” — Brynn Maltby

This isn’t the first time this has happened. Brynn lives with a condition called dysautonomia, which affects her heart.

Despite all of the hiccups in the first quarter, the Panthers still managed to score three unanswered goals.

Avoiding a Shutout

Eastside began to pick up the pace on defense and manage to make it down the other side of the field as the second quarter began. The first goal for the Rams was scored by Lauryn Littles. While Newberry remained aggressive on offense, Ohaegbulam continued to shine in the goal as she has all season, having made 163 saves.

Despite the defensive efforts of the star goalie and her team, the Panthers still scored three goals in the second quarter.

The Lone Senior’s Fire

While the Rams ended the half down 6-1, Eastside’s only senior, Mandela Marsh, hit the ground running at the start of quarter three.

Assertive on Newberry’s side of the field, Marsh scored her second goal of the season in the third quarter. The Rams’ defense slowed down Newberry’s momentum by only allowing one goal throughout the quarter.

It was clear Marsh was still hungry for more as the fourth quarter began. Charging down the field, she scored her third goal of the season.

However, Newberry began to pick it momentum back up again to close the last quarter with six more goals.
