While his career has had a rocky start, Trevor Lawrence continues to ooze potential.
Who is Trevor Lawrence
During his years at Clemson, Lawrence proved to be the clear No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft class. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 213 pounds, his large, athletic frame helps his field vision and ability to escape defenders. In his three seasons at Clemson, Lawrence had a 38-2 record, earning the most wins of any starting QB in program history. He threw for 10,098 yards, 90 touchdowns and won a national championship as a freshman in 2018. However, since he was drafted by the Jaguars, wins haven’t come easily in Jacksonville.

A Look at Lawrence’s Young Career
Entering season five as the Jaguars starting quarterback, Lawrence’s career has been one of the more interesting stories in the NFL. The year Lawrence was drafted, the Jaguars signed Urban Meyer to a five-year contract as their next head coach. After starting 3-10, Meyer was fired for poor leadership and treatment of players. Lawrence is about to play under his third different head coach, and a revolving door of coaches is never a good formula for developing a young superstar.
In his first four seasons, he is 22-38 as a starter and has thrown for 13,815 yards, 69 touchdowns and 46 interceptions. He led his team to a playoff appearance in 2022, which ended in a Divisional Round exit. Limited to just 10 starts last season due to a concussion, Lawrence will benefit from a long offseason where he can get healthy.
Jaguars HC Liam Coen said he’s had a few dinners and a few convos with QB Trevor Lawrence this offseason. Biggest takeaway is he wants to be coached hard and credits him being mentally strong/tough. pic.twitter.com/mMqq7WOvKJ

Trevor’s Tangibles
When Lawrence is on the field, his versatile skill set is always on display. Because of his speed and awareness, the fifth-year signal caller is able to leave the pocket and make plays with his legs. Throughout his NFL career, he averages 18 rushing yards per game and has recorded 14 rushing touchdowns. Additionally, his strong arm forces defensive backs to play softer coverage against quick receivers. When Lawrence is hitting his deep passes, he is an all-around threat and forces defenses to adjust.

Why Should Football Fans Still Believe In Trevor?
The transition from college to the pros hasn’t been welcoming for Lawrence. New head coach Liam Coen, who worked with Baker Mayfield last season in Tampa, should help shape him into the player that people saw coming out of Clemson. With the fifth pick in this year’s draft and Pro Bowl wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. entering his sophomore season, the Jaguars have a bright future ahead.
The Jaguars signed Lawrence to a five-year extension last offseason, retaining him as their quarterback of the future. Although his career hasn’t been the most consistent, Lawrence continuously shows flashes of the potential player he can become. As a former offensive coordinator, Cohen should help develop Lawrence and build his confidence. At 26 years old, Lawrence has a long career ahead and fans shouldn’t be too quick to turn the page on his career.
