SEC Weekly Roundup: Halfway Point Of Season

With college baseball reaching the halfway point of the season, it only means the stakes in the SEC get higher. Teams at the top, like Tennessee, Georgia and Arkansas, fought hard to secure sweeps. Alabama and Kentucky locked up rubber match wins and Florida got off the mat by salvaging the final game of the series against Ole Miss.

The top five remain the same because all the teams took care of business and swept this weekend. No. 1 Tennessee (26-2, 8-1 SEC) showed again why it is the best team in the country after sweeping South Carolina. The Volunteers controlled Game 1, but got pushed to the brink in Game 2. With the game even at five, the Gamecocks had the bases loaded and one out. But a spectacular double-play to get the Volunteers out of the inning helped set up a Cannon Peebles two-run shot to take the lead in the ninth.

Georgia (28-2, 8-1) is rolling. The bats remain scorching hot, as the Bulldogs put up another 24 runs this weekend against No. 11 Auburn. They still lead the nation by a wide margin in home runs with 79 and RBIs with 277. But now the pitching is starting to come into form. Georgia pitchers struck out 14 Tigers on Friday night. Brian Curley has been a revelation since becoming the Saturday starter and the bullpen closed it out in the series finale.

Arkansas (26-3, 8-1) easily could’ve lost the series to Vanderbilt. But good teams find ways to win and that is what the Razorbacks did. Games 2-3 of the series were fights to the finish. Game 2 went to extra innings before Arkansas put up a three spot to pull ahead and win 6-4. In Game 3, Vanderbilt led in the eighth inning 3-2 before a five-run eighth was the difference.

LSU (26-3, 7-2) won a strange series against Mississippi State where two of the three games were delayed and did not finish until after midnight. The Tigers had to claw themselves out of an early hole in Game 1. LSU trailed 6-2 in the fifth before home runs from Daniel Dickinson cut the lead to one. Steven Milam’s two-run bomb put LSU up 7-5 later that inning. In Game 2, Anthony Eyanson outdueled MSU’s Pico Kohn on the mound, going five innings, allowing five hits, one run, three walks and 12 strikeouts. In Game 3, LSU finished off the Bulldogs with a 17-8 victory.

Texas (23-3, 8-1) mashed all weekend in Columbia, Missouri. It was an offensive onslaught all series. The Longhorns scored 30 times and hit 1o home runs to knock out Missouri. Texas now gets ready for another massive series this weekend when Georgia comes rolling in. The lights will be bright in Austin this week.

With the SEC being so good this year, this ranking gets more difficult every week. Similar to past weeks, spots three through five are based on how the teams performed this past week. Arkansas was the only team in the top five to drop a game, which is why it fell to No. 5.

Tennessee gets the slight nod ahead of Georgia for the No. 1 spot based on analytics. Georgia leads the country in home runs with 79, hits with 322 and slugging percentage at .615. Tennessee is close to them in most of those categories, but has the lead on the pitching and defensive side.

Tennessee ranks No. 1 in the country in ERA with 2.54, while Georgia has a 4.88 ERA. Tennessee is third in the country in walks allowed per game with 2.67. Georgia is 147th with an average of 4.63 walks per game allowed. For reference, the Florida Gators have been struggling on the mound, but still are not that high. The Gators allow 3.90 in walks allowed per game. While the offensive stats from Georgia are impressive, the defense Tennessee plays with puts it on another level.

The only change to the SEC top five is Tennessee takes the No. 1 spot. All the top teams played well, sweeping their series.  Georgia continues to be dominant, winning by at least three runs in all its games against Auburn. The Dawgs’ runs and hits statistics were less than Tennessee.

During both their midweek game against West Georgia and series against Auburn, the Bulldogs combined for 37 runs, 41 hits and 45 strikeouts. Tennessee also struck out 45 times, but had two more runs with 39 and one more hit at 42. Every team in this conference can hit, so the rankings come down to the defensive work. The Volunteers have executed more on the mound and in the field, which sets them apart.

The teams in the bottom three stayed the same. They all have similar statistics, but Arkansas has only one loss in the SEC. After its midweek game against Missouri State and series against Vanderbilt, Arkansas led the top five with 52 strikeouts. LSU and Texas beat SEC teams that are in the bottom five of the conference, so based on the given records, it was expected.
