Florida Women’s Tennis Falls to Oklahoma

Playing in Norman, Okla., on Sunday against the top-10 powerhouse Sooners, the Florida women’s tennis team couldn’t match up in losing 4-0.

The Gators dominated Arkansas 6-1 on Friday and looked to continue their success against the Sooners.

No. 10 Oklahoma (14-5, 7-4 SEC) entered its match with Florida (8-9, 4-7) coming off a huge win of its own, besting No. 8 Auburn on the road in an intense match on Friday. The Sooners were able to use the momentum from Friday’s win to take down the Gators at home.

Doubles

Due to recent issues with injuries, Florida only sent out two doubles pairings. This gave Oklahoma an early advantage in doubles, needing only one win to secure the point.

The Sooners did just that, as Florida freshmen Talia Neilson-GatenbyNoémie Oliveras dropped multiple games early on against senior Alina Shcherbinina-junior Julia Garcia Ruiz on court one and found themselves trailing 4-1. The Gators soon lost 6-1, as Oklahoma earned a quick doubles point.

UF senior Bente Spee-freshman Reagan Parker were also tested against Oklahoma’s strong pairing of freshman Salakthip Ounmuang-sophomore Chloé Noël on court two and were trailing 4-1 as Oklahoma won the doubles point.

Singles

Florida also only sent out five player for singles, forfeiting a point and giving Oklahoma an early 2-0 lead. Already halfway to victory, Oklahoma had control and dominated singles play.

Parker couldn’t win a game against senior Ava Catanzarite in set one, as the Sooner swept Parker 6-0 on court five. From there, she won tw0 games in the second set, but quickly fell 6-0, 6-2 to give Oklahoma a 3-0 lead.

Oliveras couldn’t keep up with freshman Emma Staker on court five, as the Sooner rushed past Oliveras 6-2 in set one. Oliveras tried to make a comeback in the second set, but fell just short, 6-4, as Staker clinched the match for Oklahoma 4-0.

Florida junior Rachel Gailis, the No. 39-ranked player in the nation, abandoned her match with No. 26 Schcherbinina on court one. Gailis lost set one 6-1 and led set two 4-3.

Neilson-Gatenby grabbed an upset in set one against No. 19 Garcia Ruiz on court two, defeating the top-ranked player 7-5, but went unfinished in set two when Oklahoma had already secured the win.

Spee also abaonded her court four match against No. 103 Ounmuang. Spee lost the first set 6-1, but led the second 5-4 when play stopped.
