The Gainesville High School flag football team suffered a rout at home Friday night, losing 28-0 against Ocala Forest. The Hurricanes’ record dropped to 0-9 after their second loss of the week following spring break.
The game had a slow start with a scoreless first quarter.
The ‘Canes neared the end zone at the end of the first quarter, but any hopes of scoring were dashed after a ball drop during a fourth-down attempt. GHS coach Jason Brown quickly shook it off, telling his team to focus on defense as the second quarter began.
The Wildcats went on to score in the first drive of the second quarter from five yards out to bring the score to 7-0.
The ‘Canes turned to defense after getting picked off by Forest.
GHS nearly got an interception, but dropped it. Forest went on to make a touchdown that same drive as the first half of the game came to a close.
A Growing Lead
GHS was never able to recover, as the Wildcats (7-2) continued to score. Though Forest was able to make another touchdown early on, the third quarter did not amount to much on the Hurricanes’ side.
The fourth quarter saw yet another touchdown from the Wildcats, bringing the score to 28-0. Brown called two timeouts during the GHS’s final offensive drive in an attempted to score. The coach did not seem shaken by the score, rather continuing to encourage his players and even joking with the referee, at one point saying, “Can I buy another [timeout]”?
The game ended after Forest’s Janiana Wess got an interception.
