SEC Weekly Roundup: Top Teams Flexing Muscles

With two weeks of SEC baseball in the books, the top teams are flexing their muscles. Tennessee and Texas both responded after dropping game one and won both of their series. Georgia made a statement against Florida and Arkansas swept South Carolina. Texas A&M continues its struggles, with another sweep at Vanderbilt.

Tennessee (22-2, 5-1 SEC) remains at No. 1 after a solid series win against Alabama. The Volunteers dropped Game 1 of the series, but responded with back-to-back road victories to clinch the series. The pitching was the worst it has been all season, but the offense showed up when needed. The bats showed up during Sunday’s rubber match. The Vols had 15 hits, hit three home runs and won 9-2.  Senior outfielder Hunter Ensley had a great weekend. He went 7-for-14 with a double and six RBIs.

Georgia (24-2, 5-1) moves to No. 2 after sweeping the Florida Gators at Condron Ballpark. After Ryland Zaborowski sent a ball deep into the Gainesville night on Friday to give Georgia the lead in the ninth, the Bulldogs overwhelmed the Gators in Games 2-3. Georgia outscored Florida 40-13 and hit 13 home runs on the weekend.

Christian Adams was the player of the week for the Bulldogs. Adams went 8-for-14 with three home runs and seven RBIs. The starting pitching was good, especially on Saturday and Sunday, with both starters going five innings.

Arkansas (23-2, 5-1) moves to No. 3 following the weekend victory at South Carolina. Arkansas is starting to look like one of the best teams in the country. The pitching continues to shine, but now the bats are coming into form. Similar to Georgia, Arkansas jumped on the Gamecocks early and often. The Hogs scored 35 runs in three games, while the pitching held South Carolina to nine runs. LHP Zach Root bounced back after a rough start last week with seven innings pitched, only allowing two runs.

LSU and Texas: A Close Four and Five

LSU (22-3, 4-2) drops to No. 4 after dropping the series to Texas. The Tigers started strong in Game 1 with an 8-2 victory led by LHP Kade Anderson, who went six innings, struck out eight and only allowed two runs. Game 2 was looking good, LSU led 6-5 after six. But a rough seventh and eighth inning was the difference in the 11-7 loss.

In Game 3, Texas was just the better team that day. The Tigers fell behind early and never recovered, but this series does not mean LSU is declining. This is still one of the best teams in the nation offensively and defensively.

Texas (19-3, 5-1) enters the top five with back-to-back series wins to open conference play. Texas keeps surprising people with how well it’s looked against two of the more well-known SEC schools (Mississippi State and LSU). But after dropping the first game to LSU, the Longhorns found their extra gear and took it to the Tigers.

In Games 2-3, Texas had 24 hits, 17 runs, three home runs and nobody reached first via the walk. Texas worked counts much better and put up nine walks. Max Belyeu has been one of Texas’s best hitters this season and went 5-for-12 with a monster home run during Sunday’s 6-2 victory.

An argument can be made for either Georgia or Tennessee as the No. 1 team in the SEC or even the country. But Georgia is my No. 1 team, because it has won 18 of the last 19 games, with 12 of those games having double-digit runs. Going into this weekend, Florida was second in the SEC in starting pitching.

Now, granted, the Gators were down their best two starters, but Georgia buried the Gators. Outscoring them 40-13 across three games and hitting as many home runs as Florida had total runs. The Dawgs’ ability to hit for power, but also draw 18 walks, is impressive.

Tennessee dropped two games this week, a midweek game against ETSU in extras and the opening game against Alabama. Showing the Vols’ are not superhumans and are beatable. The bottom three have also been playing great, with only three losses on each of their records, but Tennessee and Georgia are in another world right now.

As SEC play moves along, teams have continued to have impressive performances that showcase their skills amongst the best teams in the nation. Georgia jumped to the top of the SEC after the Bulldogs swept Florida. The Dawgs thrived in all aspects of the game, combining a total of 40 runs and giving up 24 strikeouts and only 11 walks.

Tennessee drops to second in the SEC after losing two games following the Florida series. Overall, the Volunteers won the series against Alabama, but lost 6-5 in the first game. However, in the series, they struck out one fewer than the Crimson Tide, but walked six fewer batters and had nine more runs. The Vols were the last team in the country to be undefeated, so they still deserve to be at the top.

Moving on to the third spot, Arkansas moved up because they only had one SEC loss and swept South Carolina, outrunning them 35-9. LSU dropped to the fourth spot as it lost twice against Texas. The Tigers are still a dominant team, but fell short by four runs on Saturday and Sunday.

Throughout the series, Texas led in runs at 19-17, hits at 32-29 and strikeouts at 30-26. By the Longhorns winning the series and becoming 5-1 in the conference, they jumped to the fifth spot in the SEC.
