NEWBERRY — The Newberry boys lacrosse team held off Eastside, 10-6, Tuesday to secure their second win in two days.
The score is deceiving, as the Panthers (5-4) held a convincing lead for most of the game.

The team came out firing on offense, backed by a strong effort in the defensive zone and a stellar performance from freshman goalie Brandon Powell.

The Panthers extended their lead to four with 9:08 to go in the second quarter when Basol scored his second goal.
The Rams (0-6) then responded with their first goal, but a second score by Hiers with 2:17 to go ended the half with the Panthers leading 5-1.
The Second Half
Basol and Hiers continued to find the back of the net early in the third to power the offense. Colton Blankenfeld added one to the board to extend the Panthers’ lead to seven. Late in the third, the Rams scored back-to-back goals, but were answered by Basol with his fourth score.

Continuing their offensive success, Ritter scored his second goal with 8:48 to go in the game. The score brought Newberry’s lead to seven.
Despite scoring three goals in the last five minutes of the game, it was just too much for the Rams to overcome.
Newberry coach Cooper Jackson liked his team’s performance and the mindset that allowed it to be successful:

Hiers also said the work that needs to be done as the team looks to finish the season strong before the playoffs.
“We got to clean it up,” Hiers said. “The playoffs are coming in about three weeks and we got a lot of stuff to fix, but we are almost there.”
