Lagway Makes Mark Off Field For Florida Football

DJ Lagway made his mark on the field for the Florida Gators, throwing for 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns while making his case as the best freshman quarterback in the country last season. But now, he is making his mark off the field.

The 19-year-old launched the “DJ Lagway Foundation,” which helps underprivileged kids have the resources necessary to succeed in life. Lagway will partner with UF Health to aid local youth through UF Health community initiatives. On Monday night at Spurrier’s Gridiron Grille, the foundation hosted its kickoff dinner/fundraiser.

“I had to prove myself on the field first and just continue to prove myself on the field, continue to get better,” Lagway said. “But also using my platform and my notoriety to spread a bigger cause than football.”

Lagway also made waves in the NIL world earlier this week when he announced that he will donate six figures to Florida women’s athletics under Florida Victorious. Florida Victorious is the official NIL partner of the Gators that partners with businesses, community organizations, and donors to provide opportunities for UF student-athletes.

“I feel like female athletes, women athletes, don’t get the recognition that they deserve always,” Lagway said. “Just being able to use my platform and be able to do something as little as that, kind of bring awareness and a cause to people.”

How Has Lagway Looked During Spring Football?

As Lagway makes his impact in the community, he is also preparing for spring football. Lagway has yet to throw this spring, but he is going through progressions. He is limited per coach Billy Napier, who said Lagway was dealing with a lower body and shoulder injury.

“Our intentions here are to be very smart,” Napier said. “He’ll be limited in throwing activities, but he’ll participate in all practices otherwise.”

Quarterback Play with Lagway Limited

Quarterbacks Harrison Bailey, Aidan Warner, and Tramell Jones Jr. have gotten most of the reps with Lagway not throwing the ball. Jones Jr., who is a freshman and former four-star recruit, has impressed many people through just three practices. The former Mandarin standout has shown off his strong arm this spring.

“I mean, ever since he stepped foot in here, he’s already leading by example, like he’s a veteran,” tight end Hayden Hansen said. “He does the extra details, and I think a lot of that is thanks to DJ (Lagway) and how he does things. It’s kind of the standard he set and he’s doing a great job following it.”

“I was very impressed,” co-offensive coordinator Ross Callaway said regarding Bailey and Jones. “I knew they were both good. I’ll be honest with you. I think they’re a little bit better than I thought, and that’s obviously a good thing. So I’m super excited about both those guys.”
