Buccaneers Making Splash In Free Agency

The NFL free agency period unofficially kicked off Monday, with the official window opening Wednesday. All 32 teams have been active within the last 48 hours in re-signing players and bringing in new editions. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are no different.

Chris Godwin

General Manager Jason Licht had clear priorities heading into free agency; one being locking up star wide receiver Chris Godwin. Mike Evans may have stolen the show last season with his 11th-consecutive 1000-yard season, but he has not been the only receiver quarterback Baker Mayfield has relied on. Godwin, an eight-year veteran out of Penn State, signed a three-year, $66 million contract to keep him in Tampa. He has had four 1000-yard seasons with the Bucs and was on pace to notch a fifth until a dislocated ankle ended his season. The week seven injury sidelined Godwin after he accumulated 576 yards on 50 receptions and five touchdowns. The Godwin signing was one of the moves the Bucs prioritized, making it clear the team’s front office wanted to keep the Pro Bowler in the building.

Haason Reddick

Defensive end Haason Reddick put pen to paper Monday, making the switch from New York to Tampa. Reddick signed a one-year deal for $14 million with $12 million guaranteed. The edge rusher has had a rollercoaster career, starting his time in the NFL as a first-round selection made by the Arizona Cardinals back in 2017. Reddick remained in red until a short stint with the Carolina Panthers before playing every game for two years in Philadelphia. His name was prominent in the media last offseason for the wrong reasons: a holdout that lasted multiple months. He was traded to the Jets, but played less than 400 snaps due to his extended stand taken after contract disputes. Now, Reddick will represent the Bucs. He has showed promise and was once a second-team All-Pro with a 16-sack season.

Lavonte David

Licht was not done after the Godwin and Reddick signings. Linebacker Lavonte David returns to Tampa for his 14th season in red and black. The 11-time captain and Buccaneers legend ranks second in franchise history in tackles. David remains a Buc on a one-year, $10 million deal.

Ben Bredeson

The least flashy signing may prove meaningful: a three-year deal for guard Ben Bredeson. The $22 million contract for the lineman comes after a season in which he started all 18 games (including postseason). Bredeson took strides last year and helped the Bucs run game go from one of the worst to top-five.

Greg Gaines

The most recent signing of Greg Gaines is the third on the defensive side of the ball. The defensive tackle will remain in Tampa for an extra year with a $3.5 million deal. Gaines has 163 total tackles heading into his seventh season and his third with the Florida squad.

The free agency window has been kind to the Buccaneers, who may have some more signees coming their way.
