Buchholz Flag Football Demolishes Keystone Heights

By Abigale Dressback and Riley Tirrell

The Buchholz flag football team routed the Keystone Heights Indians, 39-14, at home last Tuesday.

What started out slow, turned into a game that consisted of seven interceptions, six touchdowns and a beautiful sunset that ended with the Bobcats staying undefeated at 4-0.

From Trailing to Dominating

With eight minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Bobcats were down 14-8 and looked to change the pace of the game. Coach Scott Jamison reminded his players that “they needed to want it more.”

The Bobcats turned up the effort from there by going on a 31-0 roll against Keystone Heights (3-3). Quarterback Isabella Alexander fired a pass in the end zone to Atera Clark to even the score.

Buchholz’s defense stepped up with seven interceptions. Junior Taylor Booth got two interceptions in just the second quarter. Clark intercepted a pass from Keystone Heights quarterback Alee Horton and returned it for a touchdown.

Increasing Lead

Buchholz continued with its aggressive defense in the second half.

Rushers like freshman Hannah Bowers and sophomore Jasmine Hardy pressured the Indians to force even more turnovers. Clark picked up where she left off, intercepting another pass to bring her team within scoring distance. Receiver Suzie Byrne caught a touchdown pass following the turnover and repeated it on Buchholz’s following drive.

Alexander rushed into the end zone for a touchdown and added the extra-point pass to cap the scoring and extend Buchholz’s lead to 25 points. Alexander finished completing 20 of 28 passes for 214 yards and five touchdowns. She also rushed five times for 28 yards and a score.

Following the postgame handshakes between the teams, Buchholz smiled for a picture underneath the scoreboard that displayed its dominating win.

Up Next For Bobcats

Buchholz improved to 5-0 with an 18-0 Class 3A-District 5 win at Ocala Forest last Thursday. The Bobcats play Columbia (0-3) in Lake City at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
