Rays’ Chandler Simpson Says He’s Fastest Player in Baseball

The Tampa Bay Rays are rolling into their third week of spring training, and a certain player has caught some eyes. Since he was drafted in 2022, Chandler Simpson has surprised fans with his potential. Just last year, Simpson stole 104 total bases, roughly 30 more than any other minor league player has in recent time.

Several question just how fast Simpson is in comparison to other major league players. Yankees’ No. 13 Jazz Chisholm Jr. states that no one could beat him in a race, including Reds’ Elly De La Cruz, and Royals’ Bobby Whitt Jr. Through it all, Simpson believes he can surpass every player.

“I think I’m taking myself over everybody in baseball,” he told the Athletic.

Accordingly, take a look at just one instance where Simpson shows off his speed.

In this league, a ground ball to third-base would get the hitter out in an instant – but not for Simpson. This play was performed at the Rays’ second spring training game on Feb. 22. The Rays were playing the Boston Red Sox, with Boston up 4-1. What is important to note is that Simpson did not just make a close call with the play, he was already one step off the bag as the ball traveled to Red Sox first baseman Nathan Hickey.

Chandler Simpson’s Statistics

In over 233 minor league games, Simpson has stolen 206 bases within three seasons and 1,042 total plate appearances on his record.

Altogether, Simpson has only struck out 91 times and drawn 104 walks.

Furthermore, the 20-to-80 scouting scale has calculated Simpson’s speed rank. With 20 being below average and 80 being “elite,” Simpson ranks close in the high 70s.

What To Expect From Chandler Simpson

Simpson showed up to his first big league camp wanting to impress the Rays just as any other prospect. He wants to prove that he can be a threat to the bases and a valued teammate on the roster.

Getting the privilege to wear the Rays colors is one thing, but turning the head of Rays head coach Kevin Cash is another. With his next training game scheduled for Wednesday, Simpson is looking for that turn.
