Panthers Snap Lightning’s Eight-Game Win Streak

The Florida Panthers knocked off Tampa Bay, 2-1, Monday night to end the Lightning’s eight-game win streak that started Feb. 5.

Streak Snaps

If the streak was going to come to an end, it would be at the hands of the defending Stanley Cup champions.

After a scoreless first period, Florida’s captain Aleksander Barkov proved to be the difference maker. He sniped two left circle shots past Tampa’s Andrei Vasilevskiy to take a 2-0 lead in the second.

The Bolts (35-21-4) battled hard in the third. Brayden Point netted his own rebound early off a scramble in front of Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky to make it 2-1.

Three shots rang off the pipes just inches from knotting the game at two apiece, including one off a set play from Nikita Kucherov with just seconds remaining.

Sunrise Shutdown

What did the Lightning in was their failure to capitalize on the man advantage. Florida (38-21-3) took seven penalties throughout the game, including a double-minor high sticking after Eetu Luostarinen whacked Jake Guentzel netfront.

From those near 14 minutes of power play time, Tampa Bay came up empty. Bobrovsky stonewalled the Bolts’ efforts to even the contest.

The Cats also added Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones in a trade last weekend. The move rounded out their top four on D and added an edge to their penalty kill unit. He tacked on three shots, blocked two Panthers shots, and spent over four minutes of ice time on the kill alone.

Up Next

Tampa Bay is right back in action Tuesday night. They return to Amalie Arena to face the Columbus Blue Jackets (30-22-8) in the second game of this back-to-back. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
