Action Heating Up At SEC Indoor Championships

The Gators had four athletes advance to the finals in their respective events as they closed Day 2 of the SEC Indoor Championships at College Station, Texas.

Anthaya Charlton put her versatility on display by securing a personal best and another spot in the UF record books. Charlton’s 7.24 pace in the women’s 60m qualifies her for the finals and lands her at No. 6 in the top 10. 

Wanya McCoy, Malique Smith-Band and Jaden Wiley competed in the event on the men’s side, but none qualified. 

Sam Austin set the best time in the men’s 800m prelims. His run of 1:48.92 secures his spot in the finals Saturday. 

Tia Wilson secured second place in the women’s prelims. She advances to the finals with a time of 4:40.99. Despite not qualifying, Graham Meyers set a personal best in the men’s mile prelims with a 4:07.28 effort. 

Rios Prude Jr set a personal best in the men’s 400m with a 46.57 effort. He fell short of qualifying for the finals alongside Ashton Schwartzman and Nicholas Spikes who also ran.  

Demaris Waters closed the night out for the Gators by nabbing the last spot in the men’s 60m hurdle finals. He placed eighth with a time of 7.75. 

On the field events, Johnathan Witte and Jacob Lemmon finished eighth and ninth in the men’s weight throw. Witte’s throw of 21.37m earned the Gators another point. 

Imani Washington set a personal best of 20.38m on the women’s side. She finished just shy of a point, coming in at ninth place. 

The Gators fell out of the leaderboard, only competing in two finals and securing one point. Seven events on the men’s side have been scored, while five women’s events have been scored.

Texas A&M leads the men’s standings with 40.5 points after the second day of competition at R.A. ‘Murray’ Fasken Track, while Ole Miss (39.5) stands second, Oklahoma (37.5) is third, and Alabama and Arkansas are tied for fourth with 32 points. Georgia (23.5) is sixth, followed by Tennessee (21), Missouri (12), Texas (8), LSU (7.5), South Carolina (6), Auburn (6), Kentucky (4), Florida (2) and Mississippi State (1.5).

Oklahoma leads the women’s standings with 34 points, ahead of Arkansas (32), Auburn (19), LSU (19), and Ole Miss (15) to round out the top-five. Kentucky and Texas A&M are tied for sixth with 13 points, followed by Florida (11), Texas (10), Vanderbilt (9), Alabama (8), South Carolina (8), Tennessee (3) and Mississippi State (1).

The Gators have a shot Saturday by competing in 11 final events as Day 3 of the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships begin at 3:30 p.m. ET.
