College Football Week 3 Awards

It is Wednesday. We have eclipsed the halfway point between last Saturday and the next. To celebrate, here are award winners from this past week of college football.

Win of the Week: South Alabama

South Alabama smoked Oklahoma State in Stillwater this past weekend, winning 33-7. The Jags outgained the Cowboys by 195 yards, won the turnover battle by two and had possession of the ball for nine more minutes than the ‘Pokes did. South Alabama’s stellar defensive performance held Mike Gundy’s squad to just seven points, and zero in the first three quarters.

Guys of the Week

Offense: Malik Nabers, WR (LSU)

Nabers put up monster numbers on Saturday, reeling in 13 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns. He and Jayden Daniels both had career days in the Tigers’ whomping of Mississippi State.

Defense: Mohamed Kamara, DL (Colorado State)

Kamara was absolutely everywhere on Saturday night. He made Shadeur Sanders and Colorado’s offensive line uncomfortable all night and was by far the best player on the defensive side of the ball for the Rams. He ended up with five tackles and two sacks in the Rams’ heartbreaking loss to the Buffs.

Atmosphere of the Week: The Swamp

Gator fans had a perfect Saturday, as they upset No. 11 Tennessee, 29-16. The Vols’ losing streak at Ben Hill Griffin continued, as the streak will now stretch to over two decades. Gator fans were a huge part of the game, as Tennessee committed 10 penalties in the game, including a whopping five false starts. They also got stuffed three separate times on fourth down. A huge win for Billy Napier, the Gators, and their passionate fanbase.

Note: West Virginia’s crowd for the “Backyard Brawl” against Pitt was a close second.

Play of the Week: Harrison Mevis

Before this past weekend, Missouri’s kicker was known by most of the nation for missing a chip shot to beat Auburn last year. Now, he’s a star. Mevis drilled a 61- yard field goal (an SEC record) to knock off No. 15 Kansas State.

Loss of the Week: South Florida

If you believe in moral victories, the Bulls had a big one this weekend. USF took on an Alabama team fresh off a loss to Texas, so many were expecting the Tide to take out their anger on the Bulls. Alabama (-34.5) was the heavy favorite but struggled to move the ball all day long. In the end, USF lost 17-3 but had Nick Saban’s squad on the ropes for 59 minutes.

Uniform of the Week: Boston College

Every year, Boston College releases uniforms in honor of former lacrosse player Welles Crowther. Crowther was a firefighter who lost his life in the 9/11 attacks while heroically attempting to save others from the World Trade Center. He was wearing a red bandana, a symbol now associated with his life and his alma mater.

This year, BC rocked the #ForWelles jerseys in a close battle against Florida State. Despite going behind early, the Eagles fought all the way back to make it a two-point game in the fourth quarter. They came up just short, losing 31-29, but the red bandana jerseys symbolize something that is much bigger than a football game every year.
