Pac-12 Lawsuit Dispute Continues After Judge Grants Temporary Restraining Order

A court decision was reached Monday after Washington State and Oregon State filed a complaint lawsuit against the Pac-12. A Whitman County judge granted a temporary restraining order against the Pac-12. The decision comes in the midst of teams leaving the Pac-12 as college football conferences continue to realign. The order restricts Pac-12 presidents and chancellors from meeting until the court comes to an agreement. It’s a major victory for both Washington State and Oregon State, who are the lone remaining teams in the conference.

Chaos Within the Pac-12

Pat Chun, the athletic director at Washington State, as well as Kirk Shulz, president of Washington State, were present in the hearing. And, as of now, a new court date has not been set by the judge.

This past Friday, a complaint was filed, citing a “breach of bylaws.” As Washington State and Oregon State are the only schools committed to the league beyond this school year, they want full control over the conference’s decisions.

According to Oregon State’s attorney, Eric MacMichael, Oregon State and Washington State still hold the opportunity to keep their conference alive under the Pac-12 bylaws.

Talk About Timing

Over the years, the Pac-12 has been viewed as one of the weaker Power 5 conferences. Ironically enough, the Pac-12 has started the season stronger than any other season in recent memory.

The “Conference of Champions” is earning lots of media attention this year, and the conference could once again live up to its name. Following week 2 of the season, it’s hard to argue against the conference being one of, if not the best, in college football at the moment.

The conference has definitely enjoyed some early success this year following superb quarterback play. Reigning Heisman winner Caleb Williams, for example, is not showing any signs of slowing down. Familiar names such as Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. are also drawing lots of attention. But, the depth coming from other quarterbacks such as Cameron Ward of Washington State, DJ Uiagalelei of Oregon State and Shedeur Sanders of Colorado should not be overlooked.

Despite chaos ensuing due to the Pac-12 lawsuit, fans get to enjoy one last bittersweet season. And so far, it’s been a season to remember.
