Cowboys Dominate Giants on Sunday Night Football

The first Sunday Night Football game to kick off the NFL’s 2023 season was over before it even began. The New York Giants hosted the Dallas Cowboys in an NFC East battle in which the weather conditions were rainy and slippery.

The Cowboys dominated with crushing defensive and efficient offense. On both sides of the ball, the superstars came to shine. An expectation that all Cowboy fans had hoped for.

However, the Giants’ offseason expectations were quickly shown not to be a reality for at least the first game. Quarterback Daniel Jones, who is coming off of signing a significant contract extension, and a healthy Saquon Barkley were set to put on a show for the home crowd but the curtain never rose.

These two themes produced a lopsided Dallas win with the final score being 40-0.

Dallas Defense Makes History

The Cowboys organization was founded in 1960 and has a long rich history within the NFL. However, what their defense produced on the field Sunday is now in the history books.

This was the largest shutout in Cowboys history.

The Dallas defense and special team groups produced their first turnover of the night on the Giants’ first drive when kicker Graham Gano attempted a 57-yard field goal and it was blocked. Once blocked, Noah Igbinoghene returned the blocked kick for a 58-yard touchdown.

Additionally, the defense added another touchdown to their impressive night, along with two interceptions, one forced fumble and seven total sacks.

The Giants Tumble

Daniel Jones and the offense could not get anything going whether it was in the pass game, run game or special teams. After Jones spent most of his night running away from defensive players, he finished 15/28 for only 104 yards.

The running attack held a similar disappointment as Barkley was held to only 51 rushing yards on 12 attempts.

However, head coach Brian Daboll is focused on the future as the season is still young.

“I’m focused on trying to improve, and there’s a lot to improve,” he said in his postgame press conference. “It’s one game. It wasn’t a good game and I’m not going to sugarcoat it. It was a bad game and it’s on me.”

Never Forget

Before the game began on Sunday night, the players, coaches, staff and fans all within MetLife Stadium took a moment to remember the victims of the tragic events that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001.

There was a moment of silence for the victims who lost their lives and then a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem sung by artist Queen Latifa.
