Marlins Finding Groove Early in 2023 Season

The Miami Marlins have been on a roll lately, winning six of their last seven outings.

Marlins vs. Giants

The Marlins are currently locked into a three-game series at home against the San Francisco Giants.  Miami has taken the first two games of the series, with one remaining to be played.

In the first matchup, the Marlins were successful in getting to Giants ace pitcher Logan Webb. Miami pushed four runs across the plate against Webb.

Star Miami center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. picked up two hits and an RBI in the winning effort. Outfielder Jorge Soler blasted a pinch-hit home run over the center field wall in the bottom of the seventh to give Miami the lead for good.

Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo did not factor into the decision but delivered a solid performance on the mound. He allowed three earned runs in 4.1 innings and collected six strikeouts. The Marlins defeated the Giants in the series opener 4-3.

The second matchup between these teams was just as tightly contested as the first. The Giants delivered the first blow thanks to a first-inning home run by outfielder Mike Yastrzemski. Unfortunately for San Francisco, this would be all of the runs they would score.

The Marlins were able to get on the board in the third after shortstop Jon Berti hit a sacrifice fly to right field. In the following inning, Chisholm Jr. hammered a 3-run bomb into right field to give the Marlins a two-run lead that would hold throughout the rest of the game. Miami took this matchup 4-2 and will look to complete the sweep Wednesday with Trevor Rogers on the mound.

Season Through 18

Through 18 games this season, the Marlins sit with a record of 10-8.

Miami is a team with young talent looking to compete this season and in the near future. Pitching has been a strength of the team to this point, even with 2022 Cy Young Sandy Alcantara pitching below his high standards.

Luzardo has pitched extremely well to start the season. He is currently boasting a 2.74 ERA and a perfect 2-0 record.

Another bright spot for the Marlins has been former Gator AJ Puk in the back-end of the bullpen. Puk has been lights out for Miami early in this season. He has recorded three saves and given up one run in seven appearances.

Miami will look to continue their momentum into the rest of the season. Although it is very early, they appear to be a team that could make a run at the wildcard and possibly in the playoffs as well.

Looking Ahead

The Marlins will play the series finale against the Giants Wednesday at 1:10 p.m.

After a day off on Thursday, Miami will head to Cleveland to take on the Guardians Friday to open a three-game series.
