Caleb Douglas Talks Gator Football

Gators wide receiver Caleb Douglas spoke to the media Tuesday on the improvements in the wide receiver room heading into this season. The freshman appeared in five games for the Gators last season, recording 10 receptions, 175 yards and two touchdowns. Douglas looks to take on a larger role this season with new wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales coming back to Gainesville.

Coaching

Gonzales returned to the Gators coaching staff for the third time in his career after leaving for Florida Atlantic in 2022. In his previous stints with Florida, Gonzales has helped bring two BCS National Championships and numerous bowl game wins to the program. His reputation precedes him, and he’ll look to bring intensity and discipline to the team. Douglas gave his thoughts on coach Gonzales and what he brings to the table.

Wide Receiver Room

A big test for Florida is whether this group of receivers can step up this season. Ricky Pearsall led the way last season for the Gators, hauling in 33 receptions for 661 yards and five touchdowns. Another returning receiver is Xzavier Henderson, who had his best statistical season of his career with 38 receptions for 410 yards and two touchdowns last year. Although Florida has some standouts, they will be without star quarterback Anthony Richardson. When asked about the difference between quarterbacks, Douglas spoke on how football is just football and gave his thoughts on the wide receiver room.

Progression and Consistency

As a freshman, Douglas was given a bigger role after injuries opened up a spot in the lineup. Experience is everything for Douglas, and he feels he has grown tremendously from his freshman season. He spoke on how he has changed as a player and as a receiver.

Consistency is also a key for Douglas. Showing his ability to produce on a consistent level will be important for this Gators team. Douglas hopes to show how he can score more as well as bring in more receptions. His play in the Texas A&M and South Carolina games showed the potential he has. Douglas will have his first opportunity to put his skills on full display Thursday in the Orange and Blue game.
