On Tuesday night, the P.K. Yonge Blue Wave defeated the Newberry Panthers 8-5. After a good start offensively by the Panthers, they were unable to keep the lead. In the fourth inning, P.K. Yonge started producing hits and scoring runs. Although they were not yet in the lead, the Blue Wave kept their offense going in the fifth and sixth innings.
Exciting Offensive Start for Newberry
The Newberry Panthers began to showcase their offense in the top of the first. The bases were loaded with two outs; however, they were unable to produce any runs. Danielle Oliveira was starting on the mound for the panthers and did not allow any runs in the bottom of the first. Catcher Korilyn Crudup made two clutch catches behind home plate to end the first.
At the top of the second, the Panthers got to work. The first batter was walked and then she stole second base. After one out, Natreana Akanni hit a deep double to left center, allowing the runner to score. The next hitter got on base, Akanni scored on a ball overthrown to first base, and the batter advanced to second. The next batter got on base because of an error. The runner scored, and the batter advanced to second, bringing the score to 3-0. After a walk and a steal, there were runners on second and third with one out. The P.K. Yonge pitcher Mickinzi Anderson fought to end the inning with no more runs scored.
At the top of the third, the Panthers were able to put another run on the scoreboard, making their lead 4-0 heading into the bottom of the third. Oliveira pitched a great three innings only giving up three hits heading into the fourth; however, P.K. Yonge was just getting their offense started. Anderson shut down the panther’s offense in the fourth inning having three quick outs.
P.K. Yonge’s Comeback
At the bottom of the fourth, the Panther’s defense had multiple errors. Oliveira walked two batters and threw multiple wild pitches. The bases were loaded with no outs. A wild pitch advanced all of the runners, putting the Blue Wave on the board. Senior Ryleigh Ingram hit a 2 RBI single making the score 4-3. The Panther’s defense had to work to get the last two outs.
The Panther’s had no luck with their offense in the top of the fifth. At the bottom of the fifth, P.K. Yonge scored the go ahead run, and they would keep the lead for the remainder of the game.
Last Inning Rally
Going into the top of the seventh, the Panthers were down 8-4. Blue Wave pitcher Anderson had not given up a run in the last three innings. Anderson walked the first two batters, with one run scoring after a few wild pitches. P.K. Yonge led 8-5. After getting one out, the next few batters went walk, strikeout, walk. The bases were loaded with two outs. Anderson finished the game with an impressive strikeout to win the game. P.K. Yonge won 8-5. This is P.K. Yonge’s second win over Newberry this season.
The Newberry Panthers will take on the Hawthorne Hornets on Thursday at home. The Panthers current record is 5-5.
