Gators Gymnastics Named No. 2 National Seed for NCAA Regional

The Gators gymnastics squad has been named the No. 2 overall seed for the 2023 NCAA Gymnastics Championships. Florida will compete in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the March 30-April 2 NCAA Regional Gymnastics Championships.

It was announced Monday on the Gators gymnastics Twitter account that Florida will be the top seed for the Pittsburgh Regional. The Gators will compete at 7 p.m. March 31.

Gators SEC Victory

No doubt leading to their No. 2 seed, the Gators struck gold this weekend at the SEC Championship. A meet-record team score (198.425) led Florida to back-to-back SEC titles.

Their excellence helped them claim or at least share each individual event title. Sophomore Sloane Blakely shared the vault title with a 9.950. Teammate Leanne Wong took the beam (9.975), as she tied her near-perfect score from the 2022 SEC meet.

Trinity Thomas was perfection, yet again, but twice this time. The super senior defended her all-around title (39.800) and scored two perfect 10.0s to claim the bars and floor titles. Thomas now has 27 career 10.0s.

Regional Matchup

The Gators will be joined by eight other teams for the NCAA Pittsburgh Gymnastics Regional: No. 7 California, No. 10 Michigan State, No. 15 Arizona State, No. 24 Maryland, No. 26 Western Michigan, No. 29 West Virginia, No. 31 Towson, and No. 32 Penn State.

The meet will commence on March 30, with the lowest two seeded teams (Towson, Penn State) competing to advance to the regional semifinal.

Then, eight teams will then compete in the Regional Semifinal round split into two four-team semifinals. The Gators will compete in the second of these two at 7 p.m. March 31.

Finally, the Regional Final will take place on April 2, with four teams competing for two spots in the NCAA Championships.

What’s At Stake

Florida has won 20 NCAA Regional Championships, most recently in 2022.

A chance to compete in the NCAA Championships will be on the line for the Gators as they lay it all out in the Petersen Events Center.
