Gator Women’s Basketball Fall to Seminoles on the Road

The Gator women’s basketball team suffered a harsh loss to the Seminoles in Tallahassee Wednesday night. The now 4-0 Seminoles controlled the floor and disrupted the momentum of the Gators, finishing on top 92-77 making the Gators 2-1.

The Offense

KK Deans had an impressive performance with 23 points, six rebounds, and five assists while shooting 5-8 from beyond the arc. Deans’ time on the court was cut short when she fouled out late in the fourth quarter, leaving the Gators without their leading scorer to tie up the game. Guard Leilani Correa was another spark for the Gators with 22 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Correa handled the ball well and directed the offense, staying to two turnovers while only accruing one foul.

The main detriment to the Gator’s offense as of last night is themselves. With 25 turnovers and allowing the Seminoles to score 26 points from turnovers, the Gators may need to slow down. The squad had 42 rebounds and 14 offensive rebounds. The Gators had so many second-chance opportunities while only scoring 5 points and out boarding the Seminoles 42 to 34.

They showed great ability in the third quarter and returned from the locker room in great shape, outscoring the Seminoles 27-21. But in the fourth, they again struggled to score, going just 3-11 from the field.

The Defense

The Gators got into foul trouble early, which plagued the squad, especially the forwards. The paint was often a go-to for the Seminoles, especially when the Gators got into foul trouble. The Gator had little luck trying to stop the Seminole’s offense, with only two blocks and one steal.

The Gator defense ran into trouble in the fourth quarter and could not stop the Seminoles. The Seminoles went 8-11 from the field while also grabbing six points from free throws just in the fourth quarter.

The Seminoles scored 50 points in the paint, most coming from fast breaks (17) and turnovers. The Seminoles were kept to just 6-18 from the three-point range showing the great perimeter defense from the Gators. Defensively, the Gators mainly played well when not turning over the ball for a quick transition bucket.

Next Bout

The Gator women’s basketball team plays their next game at home against Bethune-Cookman Friday at 6 P.M.

With Bethune-Cookman (1-2) and the Gators (2-1) both coming off a loss, it will be a game to put each team back on track for the beginning of the season.
