Following a devastating loss to Bishop Moore, the Gainesville Hurricanes looked to bounce back against the Trinity Catholic Celtics. The Canes’ student section was in high spirits throughout the night, but it was ultimately not enough as Gainesville High suffered another crushing defeat.
First Quarter
The Hurricanes deferred the opening kickoff, hoping to make their presence felt with an early defensive stand. They successfully forced the Celtics to punt and gained a new set of downs from a Trinity Catholic encroachment penalty. However, Gainesville’s success was short-lived as a wide receiver screen failed and brought up fourth down. After the punt, the Celtics capitalized off a 33-yard run up the middle. The extra point put the Celtics up 7-0. The Hurricanes’ chance to respond was quickly silenced with a sack on third down, forcing the team to punt. The Celtics struck again quickly with a 30-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 14-0.

Second Quarter
The second quarter started with a familiar play, when the Celtics forced a three and out with a quick sack. The Celtics would continue to demolish the Hurricanes on the ground with another rushing touchdown. The 21-0 deficit had a noticeable impact on the Canes’ players, who seemed to lack the energy that they opened the match with. The offense tried to jolt some energy into the team with a huge first down run by Caleb Young to set up a Cooper Badics field goal, cutting into the lead 21-3. Following a brief weather delay, the Celtics demonstrated their physicality with yet another rushing touchdown, putting the Celtics up big by a score of 28-3.

Third Quarter
Gainesville High looked to recapture the energy they opened the game with. However, their struggle with the passing game would derail their plan with an early Trinity Catholic pick-six. Later at mid-field, the Celtics would force and recover a fumble on third down. Trinity Catholic exploited the Canes’ mistake with another passing touchdown, setting the score to 41-3.
Fourth Quarter
The Celtics hoped to wrap this game up quickly with a running clock in the fourth quarter. The Hurricanes’ inability to adjust to the Celtics’ physicality was apparent, following another rushing touchdown. Gainesville’s offense continued to struggle to move the chains and watched as the clock hit zero. Hurricanes’ fans and players alike looked at the final score of 48-3 with disappointment.
With this loss, the Hurricanes fall to 0-3 for the season. They look to fix their lack of discipline and poor ball security next week against Clay High, Thursday 9/15.
