On an airy, Augusta Thursday at the Masters, golf and sports fan alike rejoiced. Fans saw the unexpected return of five-time Masters winner, Tiger Woods, as well as some new blood emerge on the green. Here’s what went down through Round 1 at the Masters.
Tiger’s Return
After a horrific car accident in 2021 that left him hospitalized, one of golf’s greats, Tiger Woods, returned to the Masters on Thursday. After his accident, Woods was unsure if he’d ever step on a competitive golf course again let alone walk briskly. But, after recovering from open breaks to his legs, Tiger was back in Augusta.
Nobody knew how well or poorly Woods would play, but it seemed he was pleased with his one under par 71 score.
“For the day, to end up in the red, I’m right where I need to be,” Woods said.
Young Blood in Augusta
After a near-hole-in-one from Sungjae Im’s father during a Par-3 contest, Im came out firing in Round 1 of the Masters. The Korean-born 24 year-old played incredibly with five birdies and an eagle throughout his first 18 holes. Im became the first ever player representing South Korea to lead or co-lead after any round in the Masters. Cameron Smith is one shot back while Dustin Johnson leads a group of four golfers at three under par. Former Gator golfer Billy Horschel was two over par on the day.

What’s to Come?
As Friday rolls around, so does Round 2 of the 2022 Masters. Friday’s first group of golfers are set for an 8 am tee time today. With Sungjae Im currently in the lead, look for names like Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson and perhaps Tiger Woods to make a big statement on Friday.
