Manchester United 1, Liverpool 1
Goals:
- James Milner (27′ PEN)
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic (84′)
Recap:
The most anticipated matchup of the weekend, it provided drama worthy of this matchup between long-time rivals and historic clubs. This meeting pitted a high-powered Liverpool attack against a United team that’s been on fire in the league as of late, having won six straight coming into the meeting.
Liverpool took the lead at Old Trafford, but interestingly, it wasn’t through their usual crisp and direct passing, but rather off of a set piece. They were awarded a penalty after Paul Pogba was called for a handball in the box while defending a corner kick. James Milner stepped up to take the spot-kick, and smashed into the top right corner of the net. David De Gea guessed the right way, but no goalkeeper was stopping that penalty.
Jurgen Klopp’s men held the lead into the latter stages of the high-intensity match. The teams combined for 30 fouls throughout the match, and United searched for answers, and actually out-possessed Liverpool 55 % to 45 %, but were unable to break through a stingy visitor’s backline.
The breakthrough came in the 84th minute via Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 14th goal of the season. Antonio Valencia sent in a near-post cross after a two previous attempted cross failed to result in a goal during the attack, and the Swedish international’s header went in off the underside of the crossbar.

The draw means that United have extended their unbeaten streak in the league to 11 games, with their last loss coming in late October to Chelsea. Liverpool meanwhile remain in third place, tied with Tottenham on points but behind on goal differential.
