Gator Volleyball Takes on Alabama State in NCAA Tourney

The Gator Volleyball team is set to host the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Championship this weekend at the ‘LemDome’.

The Gators earned the No. 11 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. This is the 27th NCAA tournament appearance in the program’s history and its 26th in a row.

The Gators face Alabama State on Friday at 7 p.m. Florida State plays Cincinnati at 4:30 p.m. The winner of both matches advances to the second round which will be played on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The Team

Entering this week’s match, redshirt junior outside hitter Shainah Joseph was named to this year’s SEC Community Service Team. Joseph has totaled 53 service hours since April 2014. Joseph has had 109 kills and a hitting percentage of .191.

Redshirt sophomore setter Allie Monserez was named SEC Setter of the week, making it her seventh time this season. Monserez had totaled up 90 assists in last weeks wins, averaging 12.86 assists per set. She also averaged 2.0 digs per set and a total of nine digs in the SEC title-clinching win over Arkansas.

The Match

Alabama State won the Southwestern Athletic Conference for the third time and is projected to make it to the final for the school’s first time.

The team went undefeated in their conference and only dropped eight matches overall. The Hornets are hitting .218 while the Gators a whopping .335.
