After holding a second full contact scrimmage this weekend with their newly-named starting quarterback, the Florida Gator football team is rapidly approaching their September 3 home opener against the UMass Minutemen.
According to head coach Jim McElwain, a recently held scrimmage provided younger players with a great opportunity to learn from veterans. However, three turnovers during practice have him concerned about the team’s ball security in the future.
McElwain also says two of the giveaways could have been prevented, but forced throws led to interceptions. While “small ball” may seem conservative in the fast-paced SEC, McElwain preaches the importance of taking what the defense gives.
Wide receiver Dre Massey continues to impress at fall camp, while McElwain says tailback Jordan Cronkrite will be held out a few days due to general soreness. Cronkrite’s short absence shouldn’t be concerning, considering the Gators feature four other backs who are happy to pick up any slack. Florida’s adopted a “next man up” mentality under McElwain, who says freshman running back Lamical Perine “really showed up” during the scrimmage.

Last season saw Gators offensive tackle Martez Ivey sidelined with a knee injury, and McElwain says he and linebacker Alex Anzalone are progressing well after losing significant playing time. Ivey entered 2015 as 247Sports’ top-ranked offensive tackle, and was expected to start as a true freshman for Florida.
The offensive line is a big question as the Gators look forward to this season, after all, Florida allowed 46 sacks in 2015, more than any other FBS team. With Ivey back on the line and a year of experience under his belt, starting quarterback Luke Del Rio will look to stay in the pocket and lead a pro-style passing attack.
McElwain says the Gators are still competing for playing time, and Florida’s setting a standard that doesn’t allow for laziness. At the end of the day, Florida’s main goal is a national championship and McElwain’s troops are hungry for that opportunity.
