Florida Volleyball Sweeps LSU

The Gator volleyball team (21-5) traveled to Baton Rogue Friday night, defeating the LSU Tigers.  Florida took down LSU in three sets resulting in: 25-22, 25-20, and 25-13.  The match started off tight, but the Gators willed their way to victory in the end, keeping LSU hitting under .150 the entire match.

Offensively, Florida right side hitter Alex Holston lead the team for the fifth straight game in kills with 14 and a .429 hitting percent.  The team ended the night hitting .303 and ten more kills than the Tigers, despite LSU leading the SEC in digs per set (averaging 15.93 dpg).  Florida volleyball currently leads the NCAA in hitting percentage at .324.

Defensively, Florida libero Nikki O’Rourke was able to tally up 14 digs on the night.  In addition, Florida middle blockers Rhamat Alhassan and Simone Antwi totaled for eight blocks a piece; Antwi’s career-tying high and the most for Alhassan since mid-October against Kentucky.  Florida head coach Mary Wise says the score of the game did not highlight the abilities LSU has as a team.

“The 3-0 score doesn’t tell the full story. LSU did a really nice job, especially the libero, of digging the ball. We got a little impatient from the offensive standpoint, but in the third set regrouped and were very productive both offensively and defensively.” Coach Mary Wise said.

Now sitting at 13-4 in SEC play, the Gators will look to take down their last regular season SEC opponent, the Aggies.  Florida and Texas A&M will serve things up Sunday at 2:00 PM and live coverage will be provided on ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM starting at 1:50 PM.
