The New England Patriots clinched the AFC East and remain undefeated after beating the Miami Dolphins 36-7 in Thursday night’s game.
New England was off to a good start after their opening drive. Tom Brady connected with Rob Gronkowski for a 47-yard pass, putting the Patriots on the board in the first quarter.
Ryan Tannehill had a rough first half after center Mike Pouncey snapped the ball before Tannehill was ready. The Patriots went up 9-0 on the safety.
Pouncey believes the Dolphins need to do a better job at running the football when they the opportunity.
Tannehill, coming off a week where he set an NFL record of 25 straight completions, had a bad night against New England throwing an interception that went right to Patriots defensive back Logan Ryan. The interception led to a field goal for the Patriots on the following drive.
In the final Patriots drive in the first half, Brady completed a 16-yard toss to Dion Lewis who was wide open in the middle, stretching New England’s lead 19-0.
The Dolphins had a harsh first half, especially after the 63-yard field goal attempt that was missed by about 10 yards.
Tannehill finally led the Dolphins into the end zone at the start of the second half when Lamar Miller scored on a 1-yard run.
The Dolphins quarterback would finish the game with 300 yards, but he also threw two interceptions. Tannehill lead one impressive drive in the second half, but the 80-yard drive was the only time the Dolphins were synced up and had drive of more than 50 yards.
The loss was the first for Miami (3-4) under interim head coach Dan Campbell. The defeat could have been worse because four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Cameron Wake was carted off the field with an Achilles tendon injury.
Brady threw for 356 passing yards and four touchdowns in the win, two to Julian Edelman.
