The Washington Nationals have fired former manager Matt Williams and his coaching staff after the team failed to make the playoffs. For a team that won division titles in 2012 and 2014, not winning a playoff series was a huge blow.
The Nationals were a World Series favorite in spring training, after their 83-79 mark last year. However, they did not deliver as experts expected. Many players suffered from injuries throughout the season, and the projected every day lineup was only available twice this season.
The entire season was a disappointment, said General Manager Mike Rizzo, on his explanation of the changes coming to the team this year. The Nationals are looking for a diverse coaching staff. Rizzo said the hiring process will be based off of leadership and experience, qualities that will help to propel the team after this season’s disappointment.
