Week 2 High School Football Preview

Week 2 of high school football action is here and brings with it a slate of interesting matchups. Here’s what you can expect tonight from area teams:

Eastside at Newberry, (7:30)

The Eastside Rams (0-1) dropped their third straight game to crosstown rival Buchholz in a crushing 48-13 defeat last week. The Rams struggled on defense, giving up over 400 yards of offense to the Bobcats. The Newberry Panthers (1-0) are coming off a 21-12 victory over Santa Fe. The Panthers boast an impressive defensive front featuring FSU commit Ja’len Parks (6’4″ 275 lbs) and Cory Durden (6’5″ 250 lbs). Durden’s considering offers from Florida, FSU, Miami, and Oklahoma. The Panthers defense will have their hands full with Eastside quarterback KJ Minter, who proved to be an effective rushing threat. Minter scampered for a 67-yard touchdown against Buchholz.

Gainesville vs. Jacksonville First Coast 

The Gainesville Hurricanes (0-1) will try to earn their first win when they host the Jacksonville First Coast Buccaneers (0-1). Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.  GHS lost to Columbia County last week.

St. Francis vs. St. Joseph’s Academy 

The St. Francis Wolves (0-1) will take on St. Joseph’s Academy (1-0) at home. The Wolves are coming off a 38–0 loss to John Paul II Catholic. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.

Hawthorne vs. Interlachen 

The Cornelius Ingram Era at Hawthorne (0-1) is under way, after losing to First Baptist 42–8. This will be Interlachen’s first game of the season as they were idle in Week 1. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.

Branford at Lafayette

The Branford Buccaneers play their season opener at home against the Lafayette Hornets (0-1). Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.

Santa Fe at Charlton County

The Santa Fe Raiders (0-1) travel up north to Georgia to take on the Charlton County Indians (0-0). Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.
