ESPN is reporting today that the Oklahoma City Thunder are, or will be soon, in discussions with Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan about their coaching vacancy. Scott Brooks was fired as Thunder coach a few days ago and ever since then, Donovan’s name
has been linked to the job and some consider him to be the front runner for the position. ESPN.com is reporting that Donovan is in talks with Thunder general manager Sam Presti about the vacancy. Donovan a few years ago accepted and then turned down the Orlando Magic job and in recent seasons there have been reports that the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Minnesota Timberwolves had interest in hiring Donovan but the marriage never materialized. Some believe there is a better chance of something happening here although Donovan and his family love Gainesville and the University of Florida. In an interview on ESPN’s Mike And Mike program recently, Louisville coach Rick Pitino said he believed Donovan has a strong desire to coach in the NBA. Donovan himself has said nothing and in fact has not publicly commented much at all since the end of the Gator basketball season in which the Gators endured their first losing season under Donovan since 1998.
