The Florida men’s and women’s indoor track teams will hit the road this weekend for the SEC Indoor Championships in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Gators currently hold 14 SEC Indoor titles and the women’s team is hoping to defend its title from last year. The men’s team was runner-up at last year’s event. Gator coach Mike Holloway says he is preparing his athletes mentally for this weekend.
“What I always tell the athletes is, ‘If we just go in here and trust our training, trust our coaches, and above all trust your God-given ability, you’re going to be fine.'”
Florida owns the top mark in eight events as it heads into the meet. Some of these events include the women’s 4 x 400 relay, women’s 60 meter hurdles, and men’s 5000 meter run. Other top competitors are Arkansas, who holds the top two spots in both the men’s and women’s 3000 meter run as well as the women’s mile, Texas A&M, Georgia, LSU, and individuals from many more SEC schools. As Florida gears up to take on these opponents, Holloway says he always reminds his athletes of his slogan.
“I’m a big ‘practice makes permanent’ guy. And so, we do the same things in practices we expect to do in the meets.”
Holloway also says that even though the goal of this meet is to take home two conference titles, his team has its sights set on qualifying for NCAA Indoors. This weekend’s SEC Indoor Championships will air live on the SEC Network.
