Despite going undrafted in the 2014 NBA draft, former Gator point guard Scottie Wilbekin is showcasing his skills in the NBA Summer League in Orlando. Wilbekin is playing with the Memphis Grizzlies summer league squad. Notable teammates of Wilbekin include UCLA Bruin product Jordan Adams and former Tennessee Volunteer Jarnell Stokes. Because he’s playing alongside a plethora of NBA caliber players, Wilbekin is getting used to playing significantly less minutes in the summer league games after logging 34 minutes per game for Florida in the 2013-2014 NCAA basketball season. “It’s tough to being used to not playing the majority of the game,” Wilbekin said. “I’ll get in there for like 10 minutes and then have to sit for 15 minutes or another 10 minutes so it’s just different from college ball.” In his first game with the Grizzlies, Wilbekin came off the bench and recorded five assists, including some tough cross-court dimes to set up Jordan Adams for a pair of three pointers. Wilbekin played well enough in the first game to earn the start in the second game for Memphis. “I think it’s just a matter of time before I get my shot. Once I get my shot, I’ll believe that I’ll stick and have a long career,” says Wilbekin. “But until that happens, I just have to keep working, stay humble, and stay positive.” Following the conclusion of the Orlando summer league, Wilbekin plans to play in the NBA Las Vegas Summer League with the Philadelphia 76ers . There, he will see some of his former Gator teammates as they fight
for NBA roster spots as well – Patric Young will be playing with the New Orleans Pelicans organization, and Casey Prather will be playing summer league ball with the Atlanta Hawks. While Wilbekin opens a new chapter in his playing career, he will never forget his senior year campaign with Florida. The Gators reached the Final Four and claimed both SEC regular season and tournament titles with Wilbekin running the point. “I do really cherish that team and cherish that season and everything we did together. It was a lot of fun, probably the best year of my life,” said Wilbekin. “Just with everything that happened and all the good times we had – it was just something really special.” To listen to audio from the story, click below: Wilbekin on playing less minutes in NBA Summer League games than he did in college.
