Florida vs. Oklahoma Gymnastics Preview

It’s a top match up as the second ranked Florida Gators take on the top ranked Oklahoma Sooners in gymnastics Friday in Gainesville.

The last time that these two teams met was at the NCAA Championship when the Sooners were runners-up to the title winning Gators. Florida beat Oklahoma by 0.2 with scores of 197.57 to 197.375.

The Gators are 1-1 in regular season meets against the Sooners under head coach Rhonda Faehn, and 6-2 all time.

“We’re just going to focus on loving being at home. We need to get the O’Dome packed just like it was last Friday,” said Faehn. “That gave so much energy to our athletes. They just fed off of it.”

The 10,013 person crowd at the O’Dome for the season opener against Georgia was the third largest crowd in Florida history.

The Gators are coming into this meet on a high note after last week’s stellar performance against Georgia. Both Bridget Sloan and Kytra Hunter scored perfect 10’s on the floor exercise leading the duo to be named SEC Gymnasts of the Week. This is the third consecutive week a Gator has been given this honor.

“I’m so proud of them because they really did such a tremendous job,” said Faehn. “I call them the dynamic duo because they just competed amazing.”

Friday’s match up will also be big because Oklahoma’s McKenzie Wofford and Chayse Capps took home Big 12 weekly awards. Oklahoma has received a Big 12 weekly honor every week this season so far.

The Sooners pose a threat to the Gators as a strong road team. Oklahoma scored the highest road score of 2014 in their first road meet of the season at Arizona.

Meet time is set for 7pm in the Stephen C O’Connell Center.
