Gator Volleyball Travels to Texas for Sweet 16

The Florida Volleyball squad is traveling to Texas after their impressive performance this past weekend. The Gators beat the College of Charleston in straight sets on Saturday (25-20, 25-16, 25-14) to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA volleyball tounament. The Gators have grown steadily throughout the season. Head coach Mary Wise says that is the reason they were able to handle the College of Charleston as well as they did.

The Gators, seeded 14th in the tournament, are traveling to Austin, Texas to take on the third seeded Texas Longhorns. One of the Gators few losses this season came by way of Texas. Mary Wise says that they have learned from their loss earlier in the season but Texas has also been practicing.

Florida has played well all season thanks to players like Betsy Smith, Tangerine Wiggs, and Chole Mann. Coach Wise says these players call the shots while the ball is in the air and are central to the team’s success.

No team makes it this far into the tounament without a lot of skill and a little bit of luck. Senior Tangerine Wiggs says that at this point, every team is big and experienced but they are up for the challenge.

The Gators hope to gain momentum from this weekend and continue their winning ways on the court. Junior blocker Chloe Mann says they can use this past weekend as motivation to do well in the next round.

Coverage of the match can be heard on ESPN Radio 850/900 at 7:50 pm on Friday, December 7. The match is set to begin at 8 pm.
