Exciting Weekend For Gators Sports

There will be a plethora of Gators sports teams in action this weekend.

It all starts today when the Florida softball team opens up a three game home series against the FIU Golden Panthers at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.  The Gators are currently ranked fourth in the nation and are coming off a three game sweep over Auburn.  Florida junior Ensley Gammel says she expects FIU to play their best.

The top ranked baseball team will also begin a home series on Friday against SEC rival Georgia.  Florida and Georgia met five times last season with the Orange and Blue taking three of the contests.  The Gators have recently gotten back on track winning two straight and four of their last five after a hitting a rough patch earlier in the season.  Florida catcher Mike Zunino expects this series to be tough, just like every other SEC series.

Also today, The Florida gymnastics team will be competing at the NCAA Championships in Duluth, Georgia.  The team perfomed last on April 7th at the NCAA Regional Championships in Raleigh, North Carolina where they took first place.  Gators head coach Rhonda Faehn says at this point in the season the competition is all about mental preparation.

The NCAA Championships will continue through Sunday.

Both the women’s and men’s golf teams will also be in action all weekend as they compete at the SEC Championships.  The men’s team will be defending their 2011 conference championship, while the women try to improve upon last year’s ninth place finish.

The number five Gators lacrosse team will play its final regular season game on Saturday when they head to Northwestern to face the top ranked Wildcats.  Florida will be looking to extend their win streak to 11 games as they are coming off a 17-5 win over Vanderbilt last Saturday.  The Gators are 5-1 on the road and have a 6-2 record against ranked opponents this season.

Also on the road this weekend are the men’s and women’s tennis teams as they compete in the SEC Tournament.  The men face Ole Miss while the Gators women face Tennessee.  Action takes place all weekend.

You can also catch the Florida track and field team at home this weekend as they host the Tom Jones Memorial Classic on Saturday.
