Santa Fe Baseball Dominates In Double Header Win

The Santa Fe Saints baseball team captured two wins on Saturday against the South Georgia Tigers.  With the first game being a dual on the mound and the second being a battle of the bats, Santa Fe showed the Tigers just why they are the four time defending Mid-Florida Conference champions.

The star of the show from game one was righthander JT Simpson, who allowed only five hits and pitched into the seventh inning.   Derek Vail came in to finish the game, allowing the Saints to hold on for a 2-1 win.  Santa Fe Head Coach Johnny Wiggs was impressed by the pitching performance.

Offensively the Saints had six hits, with three coming in the bottom of the fifth  inning.  It started with a one out double from Jonathan Camp followed by a sacrifice bunt, advancing Camp to third.  Casey Scoggins got on base with an RBI single; who was then driven in with an RBI single from Jarred Mederos.  This gave the Saint’s their only two runs for the game.  The Tigers tried to battle back in the last inning with three hits and one run, but the Saints were able to hold on for the win.

Game two was a perfect example of why you never give up.  Lefthander Kevin Martin started the second game for the Saints and was good for four innings.   He gave up only a few hits, including a home run, but with early errors from the Saints, they soon found themselves down by five runs.  Santa Fe was able to gather two runs in the fifth with a base clearing triple from Andrew Fears and then plated 10 runs in the sixth.  They started off the inning with three singles, and then a run came in on a walk and a passed ball for another run.  Andrew Fears hit his second triple for the game knocking in three more runs. Lee Dunnam smashed a three run home run as the Saints batted around in the inning.  In the end, the Saints won 12-5.

Wiggs says he loves the fact that his team can battle back, but he really hopes to improve the defense as the season goes on.

The Saints next game is set for home Wednesday at 3 pm against Polk State College.  Wiggs says that Polk State will be a tough game but if his team improves a win is very reachable.
