The Santa Fe Saints baseball team opens up their season on the road in Tampa against Hillsborough Community College tonight at 7pm. Sante Fe baseball coach Johnny Wiggs, who will be entering his seventh season with the team, says with the season starting earlier this year, it will be an advantage for his team.
Wiggs says the team has a strong roster this season. He says there is a lot of experience coming in from the freshmen class, the transfers and returning players.
Leading the Freshmen class, is one of the fastest player in the country and outfielder Jamal Martin. On the mound will be Saints signee Dylan Barrow who is expected to lead the pitching throughout the season. In the infield, Jarred Mederos is expected to make an impact as well.
During his coaching career, Wiggs has seen a total of 65 players signing with four year colleges. One being Gators baseball senior, Jeff Moyer. He also has seven players that went pro.
He has won five Conference Championships and the FCCAA State Championship, finishing runner up in the JUCO World Series.
Last season the Saints went 37-13 and 18-5 in the conference. Their first home game will be Saturday against South Georgia College at noon.
