Newberry Baseball’s Win Streak Ends After Loss To Suwannee

NEWBERRY — Suwannee pulled in five runs in the final two innings on the way to a 10-5 win Thursday against the Newberry Panthers.

The Bulldogs (8-5) scored one run in the sixth, than an impressive four in the seventh, capitalizing off Newberry’s relievers, who issued six walks and hit a batter.

The Panthers (7-4), following four-straight wins, started hot in the first inning by getting consistent ball contact. Tavis Honneycut hit the only double of the game for Newberry, which set up RBIs for Aiden Michaux and Brantley McCoy to end the first 2-0.

Newberry starting pitcher Rhett Buford escaped the bases loaded in the second to maintain the lead. Suwannee tied it in the third with a solo home run from Jace Moran and a sacrifice fly from Koy Frier.

Meanwhile, Newberry went down in order during the second and third innings, with a scoreless fourth, leaving it 2-2 going into the fifth inning.

Pitching struggles begin

Newberry’s first pitching change occurred in the fifth with bases loaded and no outs. McCoy took over the mound, allowing three runs in the sticky situation from an RBI hit by pitch and a sacrifice fly with an ensuing throwing error to trail 5-2. The bases were loaded again in the sixth, but only Suwannee’s Colton Rogers made it home to extend the lead to 6-2.

Similar pitching struggles began for Suwannee in the bottom of the sixth, walking three batters and hitting one. Newberry took advantage by going through eight consecutive batters to cut its deficit to 6-5 after a walk RBI and two-RBI single from sophomore Koleby Benson.

The final inning got away from Newberry with several pitching changes and a game-ending double play in the bottom of the seventh.

Spring break begins for Newberry and coach Mike Spina talked on the importance of the break ahead:

Newberry’s next game will be against Crystal River (4-10), which the Panthers defeated 8-7 earlier in the season, at 7 p.m. March 24.
