Former UF Players Make Moves During NFL Free Agency

NFL free agency got underway Monday, and two former Florida Gators are already on the move.

Veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Houston Texans in exchange for offensive guard Kenyon Green and the swap of future draft picks. Additionally, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson has signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Robinson brings veteran depth to the 49ers from his time with the Los Angeles Rams.

Gardner-Johnson’s NFL Journey

Gardner-Johnson, known for his playmaking ability in the secondary, was a key contributor in the Eagles’ 2022 Super Bowl run. In the 2022 season, he notched six interceptions. Gardner-Johnson had a brief stint with the Detroit Lions in 2023, before returning to Philadelphia. Over his career, he has recorded 18 interceptions and over 300 tackles. His versatility will make him a valuable addition to the Texan’s defense.

Last season, Gardner-Johnson recorded six interceptions, including a 68-yard pick-six against the Cowboys.

Gardner-Johnson’s Time at Florida

Gardner-Johnson wore a Gators jersey from 2016-18 before declaring for the draft in his junior season. He ended his Florida career with 39 games played, nine interceptions, three pick-sixes, 12 pass breakups and 161 total tackles.

What He Brings to Houston

The Texans, coming off a playoff appearance, look to build their roster with young talent and veteran stars. Gardner-Johnson will now look to work with safety Jalen Pitre and rookie Calen Bullock.

Robinson’s Opportunity in San Francisco

Wide receiver Demarcus Robinson, another former Gator, has signed a two-year, $9.5 million deal with the 49ers. He entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick in 2016. Robinson notched a Super Bowl win with the Chiefs and has since played for the Ravens and Rams. In his previous season with the Rams, he recorded seven touchdowns and 31 catches.

Robinson’s UF Career

Robinson played for the Gators from 2013-15. He appeared in 32 games, recording 106 receptions, 1,355 receiving yards and nine touchdowns before declaring for the 2016 draft. The two former Gators will look to continue their NFL success with their respective teams.
