The Gainesville High School baseball team suffered a 15-5 run-rule loss in six innings against Newberry at Tiny Talbot Field on Friday night.
The Panthers (5-3) got off to a strong start with four runs in the first inning. Newberry led the game 8-0 at the top of the second inning after scoring four more runs.

GHS freshman reliever Ty Quinn replaced junior starting pitcher Cade Dixon and went on to pitch three more innings. The ‘Canes (4-3) got a run in at the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit to 8-1.
However, the Panthers never slowed down, bringing the score to 10-1 in the third inning after sophomore Tavis Honeycutt hit a home run. Honeycutt was a standout in both pitching and batting. He scored three runs, had the homer and drove in three runs. On the mound, he tossed two scoreless innings, gave up one hit and struck out four. Brantley McCoy chipped in with two hits and four RBI for Newberry.

Mercy-rule loss
With the Panthers scoring at least one run each inning, the Hurricanes’ confidence seemed to be shot. They were able to score four more runs by the end of the game, but fell short against Newberry.
A combination of walks (12) and errors (five) hurt Gainesville’s chances. The game ended early after the Panthers maintained a 10-run lead at the end of the sixth.
“We just have to get out of our own way,” GHS coach Adrian Ramos said.
It was the Hurricanes’ second loss of the week. Connor Kemph and Quinn had two hits each for Gainesville.
